Pittsburgh Penguins CEO Asks Fans to Support Slots Gambling Bid On Saturday, the CEO of the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins, Ken Sawyer, asked fans to support the team’s bid for a gambling casino license. Sporting groups Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League, which is comprised of high school athletes, the Junior Penguins, and a fan- run group called Slots for Mario have all joined the Pittsburgh Penguins in their quest for a license to build a gambling casino. The groups held a rally on Saturday in support of this cause. The Penguins have teamed up with the Biloxi, Mississippi- based Isle of Capri gambling casino chain in their bid to acquire a license. The Isle of Capri Company has promised to build a $290 million stadium for the NHL team should the win the gambling casino license. The Penguins and their casino chain partner are competing with three other potential builders for the license. Only one competitor will be awarded a license. If the Penguins/Isle of Capri Casinos wins the bid, a $1 billion project is planned. The project will include a gambling casino, an 18,000-seat arena between Centre Avenue and Fifth Avenue, and housing and restaurants in the Mellon Arena area.
